BOSS owner Jeff Street and WSJM’s Spencer Rivers cover a variety of topics on this week’s episode of Raising the Standard. Get the scoop on why BOSS Services’ fair tent will definitely be one you need to hit up while at the best fair in Southwest Michigan, the Berrien County Youth Fair
Why Our Tent is the Place to Be at the Berrien County Youth Fair!
If you’re like us, you’re excited about BCYF being back this year! The rides, the food, the animal barns, the grandstand shows….and of course the BOSS Services tent. If you weren’t excited about an HVAC tent at the fair, you should be because we have air conditioning in ours right next to the grandstand near the tractor displays. So you can stop by, grab some cold water and free popcorn and relax in some nice cold AC with us if you need a break from the heat.
We’re also going to have a furnace and air conditioner on display, a Mitsubishi ductless system, a whole-home generator, and more! You can look at those up close and talk to one of our knowledgeable Comfort Advisors about any of these products and more while onsite. They also will have information to take home as well as coupons available.
If anyone would like to set up an in-home appointment while visiting, we can set up an appointment right on the spot for you. So definitely stop by in between rides and food stops to say hi!
Generator Safety to Know Before the Next Storm
Next up, after a lot of heavy storms last week, we discussed generator safety to adhere to when power goes out. If you have a whole-home generator, you won’t have to worry about this, but when you are using a portable generator there are a couple things to keep in mind.
- Don’t put your generator in your garage or under a window where there is a risk for carbon monoxide poisoning from exhaust building up in enclosed areas. When running a generator, and just in general, it’s a good idea to have a carbon monoxide monitor in your home to detect if there is ever an issue.
- Don’t backfeed your generator into your electric panel unless you have a transfer switch, which is what you permanently install with a generator so it automatically switches the power from generator to the pole. If you’re backfeeding a generator into your electric panel, and you don’t have your main breaker off, you’re actually putting power into the power lines, and that puts the electrical workers in danger when they’re working on restoring the power.
If you experience frequent power outages, we install Honeywell whole-home generators, which are permanent units that run on natural gas or propane, and then you never have to worry about losing power again. It turns on when your power goes out, and ideally, you’ll never realize that you’ve lost power!

What Could Be the Problem When Your Central Air Isn’t Cold Enough
There could be a few reasons your central air isn’t cooling your home as well as it should be. One of the easiest things to check is your air filter. If you haven’t changed it in more than a couple months, air flow could be restricted due to a dirty air filter preventing it from circulating properly throughout your home. The newer thermostats will actually alert you when it’s time to change your filter, which is pretty awesome!
Another issue could be the refrigerant levels aren’t as they should be. In that case, you would need an HVAC technician to come out to your home and check your outside condenser unit and the copper lines that run into the evaporator coil on top of your furnace. This refrigerant is commonly referred to as freon. A common problem we see for refrigerant levels being off is there is a leak somewhere, and you’ll have to keep filling it up more frequently. If that is the case, a technician can discover where this leak is coming from and fix that issue for you.
