Raising the Standard Episode 38: HVAC Efficiency Tips and Fall Savings

Raising the Standard Podcast

It’s a special episode today because both BOSS brothers/owners, Jeff and Jerry Street are on the podcast today talking to WSJM’s Spencer Rivers about HVAC efficiency tips, major fall savings opportunities, why annual furnace maintenance is important, and more!

Why Should You Get an Annual Furnace Check-Up Before Winter?

Just like your car needs regular oil changes, your furnace needs regular maintenance to extend it’s life and prevent future breakdowns. We’ve extended our fall furnace check-up special for $59 until the end of October. This entails a full inspection of your furnace to ensure it’s operating safely and efficiently before you need to turn it on all the time in cold weather. Jerry, who has 25 years of experience in the HVAC industry, says he often finds furnace issues the first time someone starts it up after sitting stagnant all spring and summer.

If you’re the person that thinks you don’t need a furnace check-up and just need to change the filter, you can go that route. However, that’s the same as saying, I never need to change oil in my car, or I never need to rotate my tires. If you don’t perform routine maintenance and catch problems before they are detrimental, your furnace simply won’t last as long as it could with regular check-ups. Plus, you risk potential major system breakdowns that will cost you more in the long run.

Why It’s Important to Hire a Licensed and Insured HVAC Professional:

Along with hiring an HVAC professional who possesses the knowledge and skill to properly fix or install your HVAC system, it’s always goot to make sure that professional is licensed, insured, and is going to guarantee the quality of their work. So if you hire your neighbor down the road who isn’t licensed or insured, it’s a risk to you as a homeowner for a couple reasons:

  1. If something happens to your home or the uninsured, unlicensed repair guy while he’s working in your home, you as the homeowner are responsible for covering the costs of that, not the repair guy.  Whereas, an insured, licensed company will cover the costs if something should happen while working in your home. If someone should fall through a roof or an unforeseen accident occurs, you want to know you as a homeowner are protected from assuming that risk financially.
  1. An unlicensed professional doesn’t normally have warranties or guarantees. So if something they previously fixed or installed breaks down, they don’t have an obligation to stand behind that work or come back and fix it in a timely manner. A licensed company typically takes pride in their reputation by standing behind their work, providing homeowners with reassurance in the form of warranties and guarantees.  At BOSS, we have 10 year parts and labor warranties on our HVAC equipment available and over a dozen different guarantees to protect our clients’ home and investment.

What are the advantages of a programmable thermostat?

Just like most industries, the technology in the HVAC industry has been changing rapidly, and 90% of all thermostat that are installed today are programmable. Expanding on that, we also are installing a lot of smart thermostats. So if you tell your thermostat that you want to be at 72 degrees by a certain time, smart thermostats have an adaptive feature to hit that temperature at that time.

This saves energy by not running your air conditioner or furnace at the same temperature all day long. It also makes it easier to achieve a comfortable temperature in your home at all times. With smart thermostats, you can operate them completely from an app on your phone from anywhere, which helps to ensure the temperature is where you need it to be when you come home from work, after a long vacation, or even while lying in bed at night.

Indiana Michigan Power HVAC System Rebates Happening This Fall

In our area, our electric power comes from primarily Indiana Michigan Power, or AEP. Periodically, they send their customers promotions for rebates if they install more energy efficient HVAC systems to replace a less efficient older system.  For instance, they currently have a double rebate on ductless mini-splits until the end of the year, which is one of the most energy efficient HVAC systems we install at BOSS. This can save you nearly $1,500 for taking advantage of that rebate. So we definitely encourage our customers and provide them with support to fill out those rebates and get some free money from the electric company.

What is a Ductless Mini-Split Anyway?

We are the only Diamond Elite Mitsubishi Dealer in this area, which essentially means we are one of the most experienced and knowledgeable ductless mini-split installers in Southwest Michigan. Mitsubishi ductless mini-splits are essentially heat pumps that don’t require any ductwork. They cool and heat your home using mounted units to control the temperature better from room to room.

So instead of one system pumping heat or cool air throughout the whole house uniformly, you have multiple units that can be set on different temperature settings. This makes them super efficient, and that’s the reason why there’s a double rebate on them right now. There has been a big increase year after year for the last 15 years in ductless HVAC system installations in our area, and they are definitely a great investment that will cut your energy costs in half over the long run.
