Every year when the snow seems to be on it’s way out and that Southwest Michigan sunshine starts to gleam through your windows, that spring feeling washes over us with anticipation of warmer days ahead! We’re all looking forward to more outdoor activities as temperatures rise, but in the meantime, you may be thinking of getting things done around the house with some good old-fashioned spring cleaning and decluttering!
There are 2 camps when it comes to spring cleaning:
- People like my mom who live for spring cleaning and pretty much do it all year, and
- People like me who dread cleaning on a weekly basis so a big spring cleaning overhaul seems too overwhelming to even take on.
Thankfully, I happened to come across an article by Bissell featuring a 20-Day Spring Cleaning calendar, and it breaks cleaning activities down by the day for those of us putting it off because it simply seems like too much. You can find that Bissell article here and the calendar below: https://www.bissell.com/blog/cleaning-blog/20-days-of-spring-cleaning-with-bissell.html
Doesn’t looking at that calendar just feel better seeing small tasks each day instead of that big list of things swirling around in your head?
Also, check it out: Day 8 on the calendar is…wait for it…Cleaning your Air Vents, something we know a lot about being an HVAC company. Not sure how to do this? Here’s what we suggest:
How to Clean Your Air Vents
- Turn off your heating and air conditioning system.
- Unscrew the air duct covers or grilles from the walls. Use a brush and maybe even soap and water to clean these if they’re super dirty to get them sparkling again!
- Using a vacuum, clean out the ducts as much as you can. It may be a good idea to rent a heavy duty vacuum if you want a deeper clean. The standard household vacuum doesn’t have a long enough hose and isn’t powerful enough to reach down deep into ducts. If you don’t want to deal with the hassle, since it’s a pretty dirty job, you can always call your local HVAC company (like us!) to do the job!
- Clean the grilles in your ceiling with a vacuum or use a broom to clean them out and get rid of all the dust. It might be a good idea to wear eye protection and a mask if it’s been a while since you’ve cleaned these!

Change Your Air Filter
Along with cleaning your vents, we would also recommend changing your air filter, especially if you haven’t changed it recently. It’s actually recommended to change your air filter every 60 days, unless you have an Accuclean filter, which never has to be changed, just vacuumed out every once in a while.
Schedule An Air Conditioner Check-Up Before The Summer Season
Last but not least, you may want to call your Heating and Cooling technician to schedule a visit to do an air conditioning check-up before the summer heat hits Southwest Michigan to make sure it works when you really need it. A lot of local companies do early bird AC check-up specials this time of year so you can save money by having it inspected early instead of waiting until summer to discover it’s not working properly. Summary
I know you’re wondering why a Heating, Cooling, Plumbing, and Electrical company is writing a blog about spring cleaning. On a daily basis, we are welcomed into homes to not only look at air conditioners, plumbing issues, indoor air quality, etc., but behind all these issues, it’s always our priority to make sure our customers are comfortable in their homes. So if that means sharing tips for spring cleaning to help you feel better in your home, then we’re here for that too!
