Beat Rising Energy Costs with a Ductless Mini-Split HVAC System

Raising the Standard Episode 66

Raising the Standard Podcast Episode 66

We experienced the first heatwave of the year all over West Michigan this week, with air conditioning put into full effect in most homes. With energy costs on the rise, we often get the question, “What is the most energy-efficient way to cool my home this summer?” While there is more than one high efficiency solution, our top recommendation is going ductless with Mitsubishi mini-splits.

Why are ductless HVAC systems so efficient and how do they work? Listen to our full 10 minute podcast above or read more below!

What is a Ductless Mini-Split System?

Quite simply, a ductless system is an HVAC system that runs without using any ductwork. A common type of ductless system utilize mini splits. At BOSS Services, we are a Mitsubishi preferred diamond dealer because we are one of the largest, if not the largest Mitsubishi dealer in Southwest Michigan. Actually, we believe in the quality of Mitsubishi ductless systems so much that the only ductless brand we install are Mitsubishi. We have had countless homeowners use Mitsubishi ductless systems as their primary heating and cooling source year-round and save 50% or more in energy costs.

How Does a Ductless Mini-Split System Work?

Mini-splits have a lot of different applications. If you have baseboard heat, mini splits will replace that and save you a lot of money. If you have a boiler, your boiler will still be  more efficient than a ductless system to heat your home, but mini-splits will provide 100% of  the air conditioning and save energy costs in the summer.

Essentially, mini-splits are super efficient heat pumps located on the outside of your home, with wall mounted units inside your home. A home could have anywhere from one to maybe even eight indoor wall mounted units connected to one outdoor compressor.  So most often you will have an outdoor unit that is linked to all of these individual heads located in different areas of your home. However, these indoor units can also be located in the ceiling or floor if you prefer that. They can blend into areas however you like, and the temperature can be unique in each area individually.

Do Ductless Mini-Split Systems Provide Zoned Heating and Cooling?

If you have a ductless mini-split system, you can easily have different temperature settings in different rooms. For example, if you had a wall unit in your living room and one in your master bedroom, you can set each room to different temperatures. This is helpful if you have a room that tends to run warmer than others. A good analogy to think of when talking about how a mini-split system works is equating it to electricity. You don’t come into your home and flip the light switch on and all your lights turn on. That’s essentially what a traditional furnace is doing. With a ductless mini-split system, if you’re not using a certain room, you don’t have to have heat or air conditioning running in that room. You can simply turn it off like you can with a light switch in each room.

What are the Cost Advantages of a Ductless Mini-Split System?

We often get asked, are mini-splits more energy efficient than having window units to cool your home? The answer to this is: most definitely. While window units are a similar concept, cooling rooms individually in your home, they are not efficient in cooling your home. Mitsubishi mini-splits have a higher upfront cost than window units, but they will save you thousands of dollars over the course of their life, compared to window units.

On the heating side of the equation, mini-splits are going to be more efficient by far than your propane furnace. From an air conditioning standpoint, mini-splits will be more efficient than 90% of the air conditioners you can have installed. We’ve had many customers tell us their electric bill is considerably less with ductless mini-splits when compared to traditional central heating and cooling systems.

What are Some Other Advantages of a Mitsubishi Mini-Split System?

Besides being more energy efficient, Mitsubishi ductless systems can also dehumidify your home by using a setting on them to do so. In the summer, you can put your unit in dehumidify mode or turn your fan speed down to pull some moisture out of the air to make it more comfortable during a humid day.

Additionally, each unit is programmable and can even be controlled by an app on your phone so you can change the temperature from your phone even when you’re not home. For instance, if you go on vacation for a long period of time, you can set your thermostat to a warmer than normal setting for the majority of the time you’re away. Then when you’re traveling back home, you can use your app to turn the air conditioning on to a more comfortable setting so your home is cool when you arrive.
