Ep 23: Why You Shouldn’t Get an HVAC Quote Over the Phone

BOSS owner, Jeff Street joined WSJM’s Spencer River to discuss an important topic on this week’s episode of Raising the Standard: Why a reputable company doesn’t give a quote for an HVAC system over the phone. Jeff says it’s very common for a customer to call and ask for a quote for an air conditioner, but in order to receive an accurate quote for a new AC that is ideal for your home, it’s necessary fo a BOSS Comfort Advisor to come out to the home to get the full picture.

A lot of people think it’s just a ploy to get a sales guy in their home, but the reality is, there are so many variables in figuring out what system is best for your home that it would be doing a homeowner a disservice to just provide a quote over the phone.

So Jeff breaks down 4 primary factors that need to be considered to provide a quote for a system in your home:

1. The Equipment

Some people will call and say I know I need a 3-ton air conditioner, but even in the 3-ton field, there is a long list of air conditioners to choose from.  So even if you know you need a 3-ton air conditioner, you also have to consider the desired SEER rating (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio), which is the ratio of the cooling output of an air conditioner over a typical cooling season, divided by the energy it uses in Watt-Hours. Basically, how efficient do you want your air conditioner to be?  This can range from entry level AC at a 13 SEER rating or all the way up to a SEER rating in the 20s, a highly energy efficient AC with all the bells and whistles: variable speeds, fully modulating, etc.

2. The Make-Up of Your Home

An air conditioner in need of an upgrade is typically 15 years or older.  In that 15 years, you may have updated windows and siding, both of which affect the efficiency of your air conditioner.  So if you previously had an older 3-ton AC, you may not need a 3-ton air conditioner any longer due to upgrades you’ve made on your home.  In order to decipher what air conditioning system your home needs, we perform a load calculation, meaning we take measurements, look at your windows, insulation, etc. This allows us to see what type of system your home actually needs.

3. Allotted Space in Home for Furnace of Air Conditioner

Furnace and air conditioner sizes have all changed in the last 15 years so what previously fit in your home may not fit now, with new dimensions and sizes of equipment. This is why it’s important that our Comfort Advisors come to your home to take precise measurements before ordering and installing a new HVAC system.

4. There May Be a Better Option for Energy-Savings You Don’t Know About

Our HVAC Technicians and Comfort Advisors have over 100 years experience combined and go through continuous training so they are aware of different kinds of HVAC technology available that may work better for your home and help you save money on energy bills.  Technology is constantly improving to give homeowners better options for energy efficiency.

Hybrid Geothermal Systems

For instance, just this year, we began installing a new technology: Hybrid geothermal systems that actually heat and cool your home using only well water, which can allow people to cool their homes for as low as $50 all summer!

Ductless Systems

We are Mitsubishi Diamond Elite Dealers, meaning we frequently install Mitsubishi ductless system installs, allowing you to heat and cool your entire home using Mitsubishi units that can mount on your ceiling, floors, and walls. They even allow you to zone your home so you can set the temperature to be unique to different rooms in your home.  So if you have an upstairs bedroom that gets warmer than other rooms due to warm air rising, you could program the unit in that room to be set to a colder temperature than other rooms.

Wrapping it Up…

Spencer asks Jeff how busy BOSS is now that we’re in busy AC season with warmer temps, and Jeff talks about how they are easily able to accommodate and prioritize customers who have an urgent need for a repair or new install, always leaving room in their schedule for emergencies.  So if live in Southwest Michigan: Anywhere, St. Joseph, Benton Harbor, Stevensville, New Buffalo, Dowagiac, Kalamazoo, etc., and you are stuck without air, especially now that we’re seeing temps in the upper 80’s, call BOSS Services at 269-468-6682.  We have real people answering the phones 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and our HVAC techs and plumbers can come out any time whether it’s 3pm or 3am!
