Raising the Standard Podcast Episode 54

In freezing temperatures, blizzards, and all the fun types of weather we receive in the West Michigan wintertime, power outages can be problematic for homeowners. Nobody wants to be left without power and warmth for long in freezing temperatures. So on this episode of Raising the Standard, we are talking about how you can prevent the power from going out in your home year-round with a whole-home generator. So let’s dive in!

The Ultimate Preventative Technology Against Power Outages

Whole-home generators are the ultimate sense of security to protect yourself from losing power, especially in the cold winter months. We install Honeywell Whole-Home Generators, and often our clients will tell us that their whole neighborhood experienced a power outage, but they didn’t even know it because their generator kept their heat and lights on.

How Does a Whole-Home Generator Work?

A whole-home generator is the easiest to maintain appliance in a household. When your power goes out, you don’t have to do a thing – the generator will do it all for you. It actually senses a power outage so you won’t even know you have a power loss until you find out it went out from a neighbor.

Without getting too technical, here’s how a generator works: The power coming from your power pole goes into a transfer switch. That switch actually has a sensor that senses power from the pole. As soon as that power is gone, it triggers that transfer over to the generator, which starts up immediately upon receiving that input. So you as a homeowner don’t have to touch a thing. The whole-home generator is hooked up to your wifi so you’ll get an alert when it’s running, if there’s an error code, or even when your battery is going low outside. It’s amazing technology.

How is a Whole-Home Generator Installed?

There are several steps that go into installing a whole-home generator.  First of all, we are tying it into the main power supply of your home. So with that, there’s some conditions we’re looking for to make sure it’s installed properly. Then, we hook the generator up to your natural gas or Propane gas line.

Like anything, it is a custom install with unique technicalities to consider with each home. When BOSS Services installs a generator, it normally takes about half a day for most homes.  We ask a lot of the questions when we evaluate what a homeowner desires from their generator. We ask things like, “Do you want to be the neighbor that has a couple of lights on and only your freezers still have power, or do you want to have everything running as normal so you don’t even realize you have an outage?” Either way, we can keep your power on for as little or as much as you’d like with your whole-home generator.
